Privacy Policy

The short version

We collect only what we need to run the service: your email address and the content you create. We do not track you, sell your data, or run ads.

What we collect

When you create an account and use Open Bible, we store:

  • Your email address (used only for authentication and password resets)
  • A hashed copy of your password (we never store the plaintext)
  • Your highlights, notes, and group memberships
  • An optional display name if you choose to set one
  • Your UI language and theme preference

What we do not collect

We do not use analytics services, advertising trackers, cookies beyond what is necessary for login, or any third-party tracking. We do not collect your name, phone number, or payment information (Bitcoin donations go directly to a wallet address and are pseudonymous by nature).

How we use your information

Your information is used only to:

  • Authenticate you when you sign in
  • Display your content back to you and, where you choose, to other readers
  • Send transactional emails (password resets, group invitations) that you initiate

Third-party sharing

We do not sell, rent, or share your personal information with third parties. Your data is stored on servers operated by Render (our hosting provider) in the United States. Render's privacy policy governs their handling of infrastructure-level data.

Public content

Notes you mark as public are visible to anyone who reads the same passage — signed in or not — and may be indexed by search engines. Your display name (or if not set, your email's local-part) is shown alongside public notes. You can change a note's visibility back to private at any time, which removes it from the public view.

Deleting your account

You can delete your account at any time from Settings. Deletion removes your email address, password, and all private content permanently and is irreversible. Public notes you authored may remain visible briefly until caches clear.
